Italy visa for Kenyan students

After getting an admission letter from an Italian University, the next important step is to apply for a student Visa to Italy ('D' National visa).

The student visa will last for 3 months after which the visa will be replaced with a residence permit, for which you have to apply within 3 months after your arrival in Italy.


Important Visa Requirements


  • Proof of admission by an Italian University, or any other institution in Italy and also specify the type , duration, and the cost of the studies.
  • Proof of accommodation in the host country (Italy)
  • Kenyan I.D card
  • Birth Certificate may be required
  • Two recent taken passport size photos (45mm×35mm)
  • A well filled visa application form and phone number of the applicant
  • A valid Passport or any other documents recognized by the Italian Government.
  • Financial proof such as bank statements
  • Medical insurance valid for the period intended

Visa costs

The students National visa type 'D' has the following costs:
  • Visa fees kshs 6210
  • VFS processing charges is kshs 2750
  • Medical insurance fees is kshs 18143 per year
All applicants are required to pay the visa costs by either M- Pesa services or deposit cash at Barclay's bank.
However, due to frauds reported recently, applicants are highly encouraged to contact the Embassy of Italy call centre for more information and guidance on how to make payments.


Visa processing time 

The appointment wait time for a visa interview is estimated to be between 15 to 20 working days .
Visas might be ready for a pick up after around 10 days.
Applicants are always advised to apply one month ahead of their departure date to avoid any inconvenience.

  • Collect all relevant documents required for the visa processing
  • Make arrangements for a visa interview by phone or by email  with a  visa application centre in Kenya.
  • Bring with you your  application documents and have your biometrics collected.
  • Track your application at any time through the net or call centre to know the status of your application
