The United Nations High Commission for Refugees( UNHCR) Kenya is the United Nations agency dealing with refugees matters in Kenya.

The agency regularly employs over 500 national and international staff to provide lifesaving aid and protection of refugees and asylum seekers in Nairobi, Kakuma and Dadaab refugees camps.


Opportunities available at UNHCR Kenya

The opportunities available for Kenyans is categories as follows:

  1. General Service Staff
These are recruited locally in the duty stations where vacancies arise.
The candidates must be Kenyan nationals.
Staff in this category work in support roles and their functions vary from general administrative and secretarial assistance to more specialised positions such as IT assistant or protection assistant.

     2.National Professional Officers ( NPO)s
These are officers employed to perform functions which require national knowledge and experience
General requirements for NPOs
  • A minimum of a university degree in a field relevant to the functions assigned
  • Be a Kenyan citizen
  • Have Kenya national experience and knowledge
  • Candidate must be able to speak and write in either English or French.
Vacancies in this category are simultaneously advertised within the duty station where the vacancy exists and in the local press.

   3. Internships at UNHCR Kenya
The UNHCR Kenya internships programmes offers eligible students and recently graduated citizens an opportunity to gain experience in the humanitarian sector.
General requirements for interns
  • Candidates must be a recent graduate or current student in graduate/undergraduate school programme from a university or from a higher education facilities accredited by UNESCO.
  • Candidates must at least have completed two years of undergraduate studies in a field relevant to the work of the organization.
