The United Nations office at Nairobi regularly offer internships to students who are currently in their last year of their undergraduate degree or in a graduate school programme at the time of application for internship consideration.

Eligibility/ Qualifications

Applicants to the United Nations internships program must meet the following requirements at the time of making the application:
  • Be in the final year of their undergraduate degree level
  • Be enrolled in a graduate school or higher
  • Have graduated with a Bachelor's degree not more than one year and if granted must start the internship within the one year.

Key information to know before application

Before making their applications for consideration, students should know the following:
  1. The internship duration lasts for at least two months and can take as long as six months.
  2. United Nations interns are not guaranteed payment, so all costs related to travel ,insurance, accommodation, living expenses must be provided by the interns or their schools.
  3. The interns must be descret and keep confidential of all unpublished information obtained during the course of the internship and may not  publish documents based on such information.
  4. Interns may get credit from their institutions of higher education for the internships ,so students must confirm with their institutions policy on academic  credit for interns at United Nations.
  5. The Staff Development and Training Unit (SDTU/ HRMS) ,manages internship programs on behalf of the following UN organizations at Nairobi:
  • United Nations Human Settlement Program ( UN- HABITAT)
  • United Nations Environmental Program (UNEP)
  • United Nations Office of Nairobi (UNON)
  • United Nations dispute tribunal , Office of Administration of Justice (OAJ)
